Antonio Amat

BIOGRAPHY

Antonio Amat,  fine artist began his artistic career at the renowned School of Art in Barcelona, where he delved deeply into a wide variety of disciplines, artistic techniques, and art theories. During his education, Amat immersed himself in the rich artistic tradition, honing his technique and broadening his creative vision.
His artistic personality was recognized with the award for Best Local Artist in Martorell, Barcelona, a milestone that marked the beginning of an ascending trajectory in the art scene. Amat participated in numerous artistic events, exhibitions, and quick painting sessions, solidifying his reputation as a versatile and passionate artist. His first exhibition took place at the Celler de Arte Cal Nicolau in Barcelona, an emblematic space that provided him a platform to showcase his emerging talent.

During his early creative period, influenced by the surrealism of Salvador Dalí, whom he visited in his Port Lligat studio. This surrealist influence is reflected in the complexity and symbolism of his early works, characterized by boundless imagination and meticulous technique. During this period, Amat explored various disciplines and artistic expressions, including painting and sculpture, traversing different creative periods such as surrealism, constructivism, and abstraction. His interest in cultural and philosophical diversity led him to study and experiment in fields like anthropology, shamanism, the Vedas, prehistoric cultures, ancient and Greek philosophy, as well as the thoughts of Socrates, Plato, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Carl Gustav Jung. He also incorporated elements of Zen and kintsugi from Japan, enriching his work with a spiritual and philosophical dimension.

Antonio Amat devoted himself professionally to artistic creation, developing a personal and distinctive language that became evident in his numerous exhibitions in cities such as Barcelona, New York, Paris, Berlin, and Milan. His participation in both national and international art fairs, such as Spike Art in New York, solidified his position in the art market. Specialized critics highlighted his exhibitions as “a significant contribution to contemporary art,” and recognized him as “a key figure in the international art scene with a unique and individual vision of abstract art.”

In 1999, Editorial Mediterránea published a monographic book titled “Antonio Amat,” written by Conxita Oliver and Klaus Drobig, documenting his artistic and philosophical evolution. This editorial recognition underscored the importance of his work and his influence on contemporary art.

From the turn of the millennium, Amat began incorporating a third dimension into his work, experimenting with new variables both materially and conceptually. The works produced in the first decade of the 2000s reflect an expansion of expressive possibilities of the seemingly known, opening a door to play and intellectual expression. The force of gesture and the vibrant light of color became distinctive features of his work, solidifying his creation and conveying a vital pulse to his canvases.

Since 2000, Amat has regularly collaborated with the Maeght Gallery in Barcelona, holding various solo and group exhibitions. One of his most significant exhibitions, “The Enigma of Alchemy” in 2003, featured medium and large format works that encapsulated the maturity and depth of his creative universe. This collection included unique pieces from the “Enigma of Alchemy” series and a set of sculptures that materialized his message and artistic evolution.

In 2010, Antonio Amat began a collaboration with Etra Fine Art Gallery in Miami, USA, regularly exhibiting his work in solo and group exhibitions, as well as at art fairs across the United States. In 2011, his work was part of the exhibition “We the Artist” at the National Museum of Trinidad and Tobago, curated by Nicollette Ramirez, which featured a selection of renowned international artists such as Marina Abramovic, Spencer Tunick, Anselm Reyle, and Ashley Bickerton.

In 2012, he continued working and exhibiting in Miami, participating in high-profile events like ArtBasel Miami and Art Miami Fair, while maintaining his presence at the Maeght Gallery in Barcelona.

Between 2016 and 2019, Amat created the “Unlimited” series in Mallorca. This series represented a significant evolution in his career, addressing the materialization of the gesture and its expansion and transgression. “Unlimited” explored the freedom and boundlessness of artistic movement, taking the concept of gesture beyond its two-dimensional representation into tangible three-dimensionality. Amat utilized a vibrant palette and mixed techniques to challenge conventions and explore new frontiers of artistic expression. The works in this series invite the viewer to engage in a dynamic dialogue between the artwork and the space, expanding the possibilities of interaction and perception.

The pieces from “Unlimited” were exhibited between 2020 and 2023 in various cities and countries, including the Vanrell Gallery in Palma de Mallorca, the Benedormiens Castle in Castell d’Aro, Girona, Espacio Beny in Vigo, the Etra Fine Art Gallery in Miami, and ArtAréte in Andorra. In 2024, his works will be exhibited again at the Vanrell Gallery in Palma de Mallorca, as well as in Madrid and other national and international cities, reflecting the continuous expansion of his influence and global recognition.

The concepts of origin, essence, elements, and contemporaneity have been fundamental in Antonio Amat’s work and have continuously evolved and developed throughout his career, solidifying his position as a visionary creator and an influential contemporary artist.
