BIOGRAPHY

Antonio Amat srtarted his journey at the School of Art in Barcelona, where he delved into various disciplines, artistic techniques, and art theories. In the late seventies, he received the award for best local artist in Martorell, Barcelona. He participated in various artistic events, exhibitions, and rapid painting sessions, including his first exhibition at Celler de Arte Cal Nicolau, Barcelona. In his early phase until the early nineties, he was influenced by the surrealism of Salvador Dalí, whom he visited in his studio in Port Lligat. During this time, he delved into various disciplines and artistic expressions, including painting, sculpture, and many others, moving through different creative periods such as surrealism, constructivism, and abstraction. He studied and experimented in various fields of culture and thought, including Anthropology, Shamanism, the Vedas, prehistoric cultures, ancient and Greek philosophy, and thinkers and philosophers such as Socrates, Plato, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Carl Gustav Jung, as well as Zen and kintsugi from Japan. From the nineties onwards, he dedicated himself professionally to artistic creation, developing a personal language that became evident in his exhibitions in various cities and countries, including Barcelona, New York, France, Germany, and Italy. He participated in both national and international art fairs, such as Spike Art in New York, USA. His exhibitions have been noted as “a significant contribution to Contemporary Art. Amat is a figure in the international art scene with a unique and individual vision towards abstract art.” In 1999, the monographic book “Antonio Amat” was published by Editorial Mediterránea, written by Conxita Oliver and Klaus Drobig. From these years, he began incorporating a third dimension into his work, with various variables being incorporated both materially and conceptually. The works he produced in the first decade of the 2000s show a body of work that expands the possibilities of expression of the seemingly known, opening a door to intellectual play and expression. The strength of gesture and the undeniable light of color accompany him, solidifying his creation and transmitting a vital pulse to his canvases. From 2000 onwards, he regularly collaborated with Galería Maeght, Barcelona, holding various solo and group exhibitions. The 2003 exhibition titled “El Enigma de la alquimia” at Galería Maeght showcased medium and large-format works. This collection included unique pieces from the series “Enigma de la Alquimia” and a set of sculptures from the same collection, where the message, strength, and maturity of his creative universe were materialized. This exhibition represented an evolution in his professional trajectory. In 2010, he began collaborating with Etra Fine Art Gallery, Miami, USA, regularly working and exhibiting his work in solo and group exhibitions and art fairs in the USA. In 2011, he participated in the exhibition “We the Artist” at the National Museum of Trinidad & Tobago (curated by Nicollette Ramirez), which featured a selection of artists from around the world and different disciplines, including Marina Abramovic, Spencer Tunick, Anselm Reyle, and Ashley Bickerton. In 2012, he worked and exhibited in Miami, USA, Etra Fine Art Gallery, ArtBasel Miami, Art Miami Fair. Galería Maeght, Barcelona. 2016-2019, he created the series “Unlimited” in Mallorca. From 2020-2023, this series was exhibited in various cities and countries, including Galería Vanrell, Palma de Mallorca. Castillo de Benedormiens, Castell d‘Aro, Girona. Espacio Beny, Vigo.
